Charlie Chaplin and Nasreddin Hodja

December 7, 1942 The Second World War has started, the world is bloodbathed, Hitler is raging everywhere. Voice of America radio broadcasts from America to our country. It broadcasts in Turkish. And they are hosting a very famous movie actor, a Hollywood star from America. It was announced weeks ago that the famous actor will be a guest in Turkey. Everyone is waiting eagerly in front of the radio.

The female announcer asks; “Do you have a message for your loved ones listening to you in Turkey?”
- "There is. I want to tell them a Nasreddin Hodja joke.” (It is being translated into Turkish at the same time.)

“One day, there is a knock on Hodja's door. Hodja opens the door, his neighbor says: Hodja can I borrow your donkey? The teacher has no intention of giving. My donkey is not here. Well, just as the man is about to leave, the donkey brays in the barn, the neighbor hears this and turns back: "Hodja, aren't you ashamed to lie with your big beard?" Nasreddin Hodja answers. "Oh man, will you believe me or the braying of the donkey?"

He tells about this famous actor from America and says the following: “People come to a decision now. Will they listen to the braying of donkeys, or will they hear the word of men?”

This movie actor had a live broadcast to Turkey once in his life, and then he talked about Nasreddin Hodja. He was reading Nasreddin Hodja and laughing at Nasreddin Hodja. This actor we all loved, this man was Charlie Chaplin.
