There are some movies that we can never get rid of, even after years. These kinds of films, which we describe as development films that especially inspire us, can create great changes in our lives. Movies have great potential to make us better than we are.

In order for any film to be considered a development film, it must have some common features. First of all, it should give positive messages about life and give us different perspectives. It should encourage and motivate us to pursue our dreams. It should also strengthen us in our struggle with difficulties and give us hope for the future. Productions with these features can be considered as development films.

I love using movie clips as a motivation and development tool in my training and coaching work. So far, I have witnessed many times that dozens of people can change their lives in one fell swoop with a movie they watch. For this reason, I believe that certain films with a developmental theme can have a much stronger impact on our lives than many educational processes. How can a movie really create such an impact? Actually, there are several reasons!

The Educational Power of Movies

The foremost of these reasons is that movies are very suitable for identifying with our lives, with their subject and characters. In addition, we use the method of learning by modeling in our learning process throughout life. Movie characters also provide us with an important opportunity as a role model. Besides, we live in the age of visual communication in today's world. We have the chance to express important messages that would take a long time to describe with words, much more effectively with a movie scene. At this point, the important thing is to watch movies with this awareness and to support them with systematic methods.

When you pay attention to the following guidelines while watching a movie, you can easily turn it into an educational activity:  First of all, you should choose the right movie and consider this valuable time as part of a development process. What does this movie you watch right now tell you in general, and what problems can it help you to solve in your life? How and where can you use the instructional scenes in the movie in your life? If you were to put yourself in that character's shoes, what would you do and what decisions would you make in the plot of the movie? If there was a sequel to this movie, how do you think it would be?

Movie Analysis: What About Bob?

At the beginning of these films is the 1991 black comedy What About Bob? (What About Bob?) is coming. Starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfus, this movie is a true development classic. Bill Murray plays the character of Bob Wiley, a patient with an obsession. Dr. Leo Marvin, on the other hand, is an extremely egocentric, controlling and career-oriented family man… As soon as Bob meets Dr. Marvin, he believes that he can help him.

Dr. Marvin advises Bob, who has fears in their first meeting: Focus on your first step towards that goal, not your farthest big goal. What he wants from Bob is to take baby steps towards his goal. Thus, he succeeds in breaking that big and scary goal in his eyes into small pieces… Breaking big goals into small pieces is an effective motivational technique. This also applies to solving big problems.

Bob, who soon becomes addicted to his doctor, will follow his doctor, who is on a long vacation with his family. Meeting his doctor's lovely and friendly family on vacation, Bob is actually searching for that magical thing we've all been looking for, and maybe he believes he's found it. This thing is love.

The Healing Power of Love

Throughout the film, we witness the healing power of love. I believe that love, which I believe is the number one medicine in the treatment of all diseases, has an important place in our lives as well as for Bob.

This rapprochement with each of his family members will enable Bob to make tremendous progress in his fight against his illness. But Dr Marvin, who dreams of a peaceful vacation, is not at all happy with his family's uncontrolled rapprochement with his new patient. At first, the doctor, who was looking for ways to get rid of him somehow, could not reach this goal. Because nothing can stop Bob from reaching his goal. This situation, which seemed amusing at first, is not what Dr. It becomes more and more tragic for Marvin. This stubborn stickiness of Bob is stressing him out day by day and causing his health to deteriorate… Bob is actually a very intelligent person with high potential. He manages to draw positive lessons by evaluating all these experiences as a part of the therapy process.

While the movie ends with a happy ending, it contains important messages for all of us. To love and be loved is an important source of life for every human being. Every person who seeks and finds the tools for this will experience the power of the greatest motivation in life. Also, every person must have a worthy life purpose. This is one of the biggest development tools that turns the potential power within you into reality.

Finally, do as Bob Wiley did…

Be like ivy! Hold on tight to your dream until it comes true.
