The Path to the Heart

William Holman Hunt's painting “The Importunate Neighbor”.

The man in the picture is punching an old door. He is waiting for the door to open, weary with himself. At midnight he obviously has nowhere to go. She came barefoot, only wearing a dress. Maybe he came to that house to take shelter, maybe he left the main road and walked for a long time. But he cannot open the door; because the door doesn't have a handle. That door just needs to be opened from the inside. It cannot enter through stone walls, there are no windows.

All he can do there is wait for the door to open. On the left side of the picture, a mother and a puppy are drinking water from a special container. There is a bench right next to the door, a clean well-maintained bench. On the other side of the door, we see a broom. Even the dogs drinking water increases the man's desperation a little more. The man is obviously tired, maybe he needs to listen; but it doesn't sit on the wooden seat next to it. He wants to go in and the door won't open; because it opens only from the inside. An intruder can never enter. It is the heart of man, and as much as you want, you cannot go further. A gate is located at the entrance of the garden. That door is open, anyone can enter. However, the road leading inside is a bit narrow and surrounded by trees. When we look inside from the road, there are dogs there and they pose a threat. It takes some courage to walk inward from the road; but anyone who dares to meet on the way can enter. Anyone can sit on the wooden chair in that garden. However, not everyone can enter.
