Seneca's Legacy

The Stoic philosopher Seneca is imprisoned for the crime of assassinating the emperor Nero. The eminent thinker is given the privilege of choosing his own mode of death, but is not given time to make his will. Seneca, at his last moment, turns to his family, who is waiting by his side, says, "Don't worry, I'm leaving you something much more valuable than material wealth: an example of a virtuous life!"

Courage of Epictetus

“I warned you not to over tighten!” Suffice it to say, Epictetus clinches his courage with these words:

“I die, I die; but not moaning! Do I lie in prison, I will; but not complaining! Exile, I go; Who can stop me from starting out with a smile? Will I be chained if I don't reveal what I know? No one can explain to me what I don't want! They can only chain my feet, not my will!”
